Using real feathers in art & jewelry:
My art with “A Feather by Sunshine” is inspired by my interest in using sustainable and organic materials in decor pieces and jewelry. I have long-questioned why humans use unethically sourced, unsustainable materials like dyed plucked feathers and plastic beads to replicate organic art, instead of just using natural materials.I believe we have a right to have beautiful things in our lives, but these beautiful things should not have to come at the expense of our earth and its creatures. My art is meant to be sturdy while still being sourced from repurposed materials.
With every jewelry and art piece made from “A Feather From Sunshine” I hope to shine a light on the stories of the birds which feathers I use. When I’m not using avian feathers in my art pieces I enjoy using other natural materials such as : wood, shells, seeds, crystals and dried florals.
Why use real feathers?
Parrots are the third most popular pet, yet they are the number one most likely pet to be rehomed. Parrots have an average of three homes in their lifetimes. Every bird produces unique and beautiful feathers, yet we turn to the unethical feathers industry to pluck feathers from chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese and dye them to sell to craft fairs and artists. I hope my work using sustainably sourced feathers encourages others to look deeper into how art they love is produced.
